As we had to move out of our own home by a certain date the pressure was on to make our new home habitable. The weeks leading up to the move-in were quite hectic. I was fortunate enough to have good friends, helpful work associates and understanding tradesmen who were willing to trip over each other in order to get us in.<br /><br />I spent many late nights at the house trying to get things done and by doing so I had the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">privilege</span> of being the first person to sleep there. Yes, the house is still <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">proceeding</span> at a healthy rate. So much so that I have <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">little</span> time to spend on anything else hence the weeks of blog absence.<br />I have spent much of the past few weeks insulating the attic roof. This has been a very time consuming process as I have devised my own insulating method based on multiple air spaces, bulk insulation and concertina reflective foil <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">batts</span>. Most of my nights have been spent on site working by the light of an electric lantern. An attic <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">roof</span>, as a rule, is a hot box in the summer. The temperature inside a roof in summer can be over 70 degrees <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Celsius</span>, so building a roof in one can be troublesome. The main problem with summer heat gain is RADIANT HEAT. To combat this I devised my own insulation method. Firstly there is a layer of reflective concertina <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">batts</span> suspended 100mm from the underside of the roof. Then there is a layer of R2.0 Bulk insulation suspended on reflective foil <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">sisilation</span> 100mm below the concertina <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">batts</span> and 100mm above the plaster ceiling. This method creates 3 air gaps and prevents the bulk insulation touching the ceiling.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366443971525832178" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 254px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvWG8-QeqRTqHBQm6id1uZYfLm2H8aZzCoo7TgJXzFZl2yJ_g5EvgqtPRmnSa7Lc7oUIiTDgrBcwdRSNDvy7yqh1p1-m9uE9zOGxCjqgbALjFNHj7Z1yMrUiD2wVfd0x6zWDxFeI7e8_A/s400/diary.jpg" border="0" />This is an excerpt from my daily planner when I first devised my insulating method. If you want to understand the importance of air gaps for insulating, try this practical demonstration.</div><div>Next time you have a cup of coffee, touch the side of the cup with your fingers. It is important to have a strong working relationship with a builder to achieve a good result. This part of the roof was always going to be tricky. I decided not to detail it too much on my drawings but instead built a scale model of it for the builder to refer to on site. The facade or our house is reminiscent of the Californian Bungalow style. This style coupled with our chosen <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">attic</span> roof form lends itself to a shingle roofing system. The problem here is that a slate roof is <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">prohibitively</span> expensive but the flattest concrete roof tile is too bulky and not the correct size or proportion to compliment the roof form. Our solution was to have an American style roofing shingle installed. This system uses glass fibre asphalt shingles and achieves the aesthetic we were after. This system of roofing is also incredibly strong and has a superior thermal performance in comparison to a metal or tile clad roof.</div><div align="center">This type of roofing is used on over 80% of houses in North America but not even 1% here in Australia.<br /></div><div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYJs_30L3LuyNl6CXEe9J8LWz6h_H4uSQlQMMILIE_pmbS3uS7MeJIGz-ZLVRIawSZUcAVTBa7eWIDBHXaa_uWmzmBAdc4mHDuH1l8zVQ32_RnGKYRwb7FwgWAKCSDp2nR5vaUJ1nzXhM/s1600-h/P1150439.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328845907585536626" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYJs_30L3LuyNl6CXEe9J8LWz6h_H4uSQlQMMILIE_pmbS3uS7MeJIGz-ZLVRIawSZUcAVTBa7eWIDBHXaa_uWmzmBAdc4mHDuH1l8zVQ32_RnGKYRwb7FwgWAKCSDp2nR5vaUJ1nzXhM/s400/P1150439.JPG" border="0" /></a> Supplies for the roofing. 12mm <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">tongue</span> & groove <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">ply board</span>, roofing underlay and shingles.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV3jVotS6bWECkxXF6FXdkBUx6vEN9nzCArBxgyTMqNuVMoSSgxonjCyl0hzLGrJ5rW37yc-tJqVSL4SXqtbxyJLMxtkQgW2RfSHedC1hKbMA859hMqwe2a_XNwfAl-bDEBIVMZdmixjA/s1600-h/P1150433.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328845801949515666" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV3jVotS6bWECkxXF6FXdkBUx6vEN9nzCArBxgyTMqNuVMoSSgxonjCyl0hzLGrJ5rW37yc-tJqVSL4SXqtbxyJLMxtkQgW2RfSHedC1hKbMA859hMqwe2a_XNwfAl-bDEBIVMZdmixjA/s400/P1150433.JPG" border="0" /></a> <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Ply board</span> is fixed to the truss rafters. This sounds simple but to do so meant that we had to break the rules of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">convention</span> by not building a typical 'volume builder' type home and not performing an architectural, post modern act of gymnastics.</div><br /><div align="center">What this means is that our design aesthetic had to be driven by applying a proportion consistent with the intended style; not a farmhouse, not an urban townhouse but a family house for a country town. </div><div align="center">Design is a very <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">personal</span> thing, everyone has different tastes, requirements and aspirations and in the end all you need are firm ideas and to be comfortable with your decisions.</div><div align="center">We are happy with our design outcome and we are enjoying the process.</div><br /><div align="center"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311106742650716050" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 222px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJKzYlzOPDhlGzIfqZa4RvQcaf0e11s2Xqwi2YInwXOFzY4lJx3YlckU_YOW0jUJu1dF2offhNXeOUFD1W5_NaAM6GaXFVRMzvhL0jiGaQ0ui9FfuvbWskooF78FL0ihhKYk_wJvV99Zs/s400/contour.jpg" border="0" /></div><br /><div align="center">I first took levels on the block and created a contour plan from the data in order to determine the extent of the site cut and to develop the elevations.</div><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHdVjWJBO_WDIs3_HRYJzw2Dk5WuLMCAnyqis-Ms5WAHS9sKtHXwqYgL1XNDUDPZNLVFAFrZ0Pnyh93F0hAATMxt0aQhYrp7dK-_ANOiAgVg5yNGqyGotj2yt_X-QUZo8OU7lUB7nBsFE/s1600-h/elev-1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311101029894044738" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 245px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHdVjWJBO_WDIs3_HRYJzw2Dk5WuLMCAnyqis-Ms5WAHS9sKtHXwqYgL1XNDUDPZNLVFAFrZ0Pnyh93F0hAATMxt0aQhYrp7dK-_ANOiAgVg5yNGqyGotj2yt_X-QUZo8OU7lUB7nBsFE/s400/elev-1.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />A preliminary sketch of the front elevation. I suppose youv'e got to expect that building close to a disused quarry on the side of an extinct volcano.<br />About a third of the holes were successfully drilled out for stumps but the others were more troublesome. These particular stump holes were abandonned in lieu of an alternative method of footing, namely Brick Piers. With the porous rocks and the loose dirt laying about, the site ended up resembling a lunar lanscape .</div><div align="center">Anyway, I did expect there to be rock in the way and brick piers had already been discussed as an alternative in the case that stumps were not possible, (It is always good to think of possible obstacles during the planning process and decide upon a solution to avoid hold-ups if the problem actually occurs). </div><div align="center"> </div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7k8nTxgqDgh8RCUiDQ_VPyqX07HHWIfEMBH88gnl3yOqIK1wmp3v63XiqrRC3xvDkL7oJvPBc-BlRCiwYscdLMXXwFWuNIOMEXYDhJxRGE8hhpEdOuwMZWcRXo2vZ1E4NHaI1z6S4VOc/s1600-h/P1140292.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308079476032311170" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7k8nTxgqDgh8RCUiDQ_VPyqX07HHWIfEMBH88gnl3yOqIK1wmp3v63XiqrRC3xvDkL7oJvPBc-BlRCiwYscdLMXXwFWuNIOMEXYDhJxRGE8hhpEdOuwMZWcRXo2vZ1E4NHaI1z6S4VOc/s400/P1140292.JPG" border="0" /></a> Neil Armstrong is just out of frame on the left.</div><div align="center"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX_vn84hA6mJd_pmbA-A9-oZd9L4UpBb9W4XRmsAGnGN2nr5BNxmUSnF6k9zERKfKVAUbNezk2p2rTT8crBrV6DNhvdwEzHpY74zLObyfQMJkrsknQa6iBaZPcoXsCNjJYJm3cTCey9v0/s1600-h/P1140291.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308079307944655666" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX_vn84hA6mJd_pmbA-A9-oZd9L4UpBb9W4XRmsAGnGN2nr5BNxmUSnF6k9zERKfKVAUbNezk2p2rTT8crBrV6DNhvdwEzHpY74zLObyfQMJkrsknQa6iBaZPcoXsCNjJYJm3cTCey9v0/s400/P1140291.JPG" border="0" /></a> Anyone want a big rock?<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuUWqFdZ71HMEOiUi4JtwdTZT_br4VRypF_smcsnOEX4i53aZI_qUKGkEVhn9Hp9V9uE-CO_QTq21hi7uEnDS46ZpYMiKXTy_berooRbJRuDm8l-mXM_hkmjfSaKO7Cu3n1kQYBeBnMwk/s1600-h/P1140289.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308079180470028114" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuUWqFdZ71HMEOiUi4JtwdTZT_br4VRypF_smcsnOEX4i53aZI_qUKGkEVhn9Hp9V9uE-CO_QTq21hi7uEnDS46ZpYMiKXTy_berooRbJRuDm8l-mXM_hkmjfSaKO7Cu3n1kQYBeBnMwk/s400/P1140289.JPG" border="0" /></a> Here you can see the difference between the round stump hole and the large, square, previously rock laden brick pier hole.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8yV_wbl1Z8ivR-zIpnRyJs3qhlRJ6qO8EqUrxtYWwaf5UeIszdt7w-Mat5YSL-qsY8BAUHteGTI8ozc3NEeXXzE0PzelNyrcHx1kp4dUXnfP2ciTO-dPo0dJ76jxWjaWj-TZZ3BfSH5s/s1600-h/P1140368.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308079042045498146" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8yV_wbl1Z8ivR-zIpnRyJs3qhlRJ6qO8EqUrxtYWwaf5UeIszdt7w-Mat5YSL-qsY8BAUHteGTI8ozc3NEeXXzE0PzelNyrcHx1kp4dUXnfP2ciTO-dPo0dJ76jxWjaWj-TZZ3BfSH5s/s400/P1140368.JPG" border="0" /></a> The wire protruding from the concrete footing is to go through the centre of the brick pier.</div><div>The bricks hold the house up and the wire holds the house down.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHeroxBS4mtXc6vBtnGu7u6zoC3qL4rHhhZfyWtnozPXOYK4c9zWruQQeoq-or8zdN-1MYTOqT1S5H-kZU6dhZKeogRZPuhzUqAyi8BSUmO1SDBISXJTQS4Cq3Tzlc2AOmSw4xrmFAVQ/s1600-h/P1140372.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308078903070383026" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHeroxBS4mtXc6vBtnGu7u6zoC3qL4rHhhZfyWtnozPXOYK4c9zWruQQeoq-or8zdN-1MYTOqT1S5H-kZU6dhZKeogRZPuhzUqAyi8BSUmO1SDBISXJTQS4Cq3Tzlc2AOmSw4xrmFAVQ/s400/P1140372.JPG" border="0" /></a> All footings concreted and ready for sub-floor work to begin.<br /><br /><br /></div><div>Things are still going well and we are looking forward to the next stage of works.</div><div>Everything is progressing as planned.</div><div>Greg<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div><div align="center"></div></div><br /></div>GREGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07054350788256285036noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109873744845747074.post-41101376782112549422009-02-20T19:03:00.000+11:002009-02-20T20:39:24.783+11:00Footings<div align="center">The engineer had a look at the soil and gave us the go-ahead. As of this year all building sites are required to have this kind of fencing installed for the duration of the build. It doesn't actually stop intruders getting in but it does get in the way of those trying to work on the building site. All in all a perfect piece of beaurocracy that cost me $2000 for the inconvenience.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxdgOlFa98nhtugeRk6N6AaG413JUedFhdEWSr2CHE_EbJhjsljteF69vO3OTXAtus35kFuPFTCBHLMHPvlbOEo8SYjgAwd3Cv2NW2_UvsTNakBuXgifWjyoY7XW0w6RHNtv6ElCsBcNw/s1600-h/P1140204.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304790145533966306" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxdgOlFa98nhtugeRk6N6AaG413JUedFhdEWSr2CHE_EbJhjsljteF69vO3OTXAtus35kFuPFTCBHLMHPvlbOEo8SYjgAwd3Cv2NW2_UvsTNakBuXgifWjyoY7XW0w6RHNtv6ElCsBcNw/s400/P1140204.JPG" border="0" /></a> Now, here's a lovely straight, perfectly formed trench in our rock-free soil!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-0hJCcV29E6BxZF6I5q8QY5nWsxaNvSrtLqUyLaK7WJK2J59-pSuBi64FmvYisSGwjL6XDCyQcmLs6WCkrEZhzWskpafZ1BwmziYJxtgvral9eVrS_U0mLpqGjWhs4b0_Y7fB-W38JMk/s1600-h/P1140207.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304789930066415554" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-0hJCcV29E6BxZF6I5q8QY5nWsxaNvSrtLqUyLaK7WJK2J59-pSuBi64FmvYisSGwjL6XDCyQcmLs6WCkrEZhzWskpafZ1BwmziYJxtgvral9eVrS_U0mLpqGjWhs4b0_Y7fB-W38JMk/s400/P1140207.JPG" border="0" /></a> ....and here is a slight problem.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhFB7gMuPrCrI-sUSV0dDymKtYIAr5l3nQJM4EJu75RzikURGydSqVW3w4PDXN2KGAov7-_UkdhTHIGFM8gUak5CqMJTn2VrWHoais0vlqSyHOSklwgP06gvuNvzxvj86EYhuIdJ2IYoQ/s1600-h/P1140211.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304789705549898370" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhFB7gMuPrCrI-sUSV0dDymKtYIAr5l3nQJM4EJu75RzikURGydSqVW3w4PDXN2KGAov7-_UkdhTHIGFM8gUak5CqMJTn2VrWHoais0vlqSyHOSklwgP06gvuNvzxvj86EYhuIdJ2IYoQ/s400/P1140211.JPG" border="0" /></a>The strip footings to the perimeter of the house were scaped free of rock, passed by the building inspector and the steel reinforced concrete footings were placed. A pad footing hole for the stumps. Some of these holes have rock in them believe it or not but we're looking good for having stumps in them by the end of next week.</div><div>In the meantime I have to have a few discussions with the window manufacturer about a couple of our 'special' windows so we can get them ordered.</div><div>Our home is progressing very well at this early stage. With consecutive days over 40 degrees the ground was like concrete so the resultant hole in the ground was only about 5mm deep.....It was all about the ceremony really.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5W1abaOwMxtrt55BFaE28h9B3Wx8pyp5Vr4cKSrhTHWfs1XGfXSEeN5RG20DvP8nk4_qI-AnS1MPq2LCGdEfqaVtXYiI2rljgey56qw5jZjojcpQiHmbO-qzAtwmB3utxRHsvLrwSlU8/s1600-h/P1140059.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302916164081258658" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5W1abaOwMxtrt55BFaE28h9B3Wx8pyp5Vr4cKSrhTHWfs1XGfXSEeN5RG20DvP8nk4_qI-AnS1MPq2LCGdEfqaVtXYiI2rljgey56qw5jZjojcpQiHmbO-qzAtwmB3utxRHsvLrwSlU8/s400/P1140059.JPG" border="0" /></a> As you can see the excavation crew made a slight improvement on the hole the boys dug. I'm sure they were glad that we made a start for them.<br />Due to the amount of rock on the site and the fact that the site cut reaches the required founding depth at the back corner, we got the engineer back to have a look to see if we could amend the soil report to accommodate a shallower footing design. I should find out this week then the laying of the footings can commence.<br /><div><div>Greg.</div></div><br /></div>GREGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07054350788256285036noreply@blogger.com14
